A Homeowner’s Guide to Being Cockroach Free
The truth is, nobody likes the sight of cockroaches. They are especially horrible if they are of the winged species and most people panic when that happens. Unfortunately, most of us will definitely encounter these little brown critters from time to time as they are ubiquitous and extremely hard to get rid of permanently.

This is because cockroaches can survive on almost anything, from food scraps to paper and even sometimes, plastic.

Here are some easy ways to make sure you can avoid an infestation:

1. Throw out your rubbish every night. Don’t leave them overnight as it is a rich food source for cockroaches
2. Use a covered dustbin to make sure that they cannot access your wastes
3. Scrub clean all stove tops and ovens after usage so that bits of food don’t attract them
4. Never leave your pots, pans and dishes overnight in the sink as this will turn into a cockroach playground
5. Make sure that if you store any food on the counter and in the cabinets, they must be sealed in airtight containers

If you are not a fan of using so many chemical insecticides around the house, some alternative methods you can use to get rid of them include:

1. Using Diatomaceous earth, which is a powder that can dry cockroaches up upon contact.
2. Use soapy water as this can kill them immediately
3. Use a mix of sugar and baking soda and sprinkle some where you think cockroaches might walk and if they ingest the mixture, the baking soda will kill them by neutralizing stomach acids
4. Mouthwash is another method that is effective. Mix some mouthwash and dishwashing soap with some water, fill into a spray bottle and spray directly on the insect.
5. Set a trap by filling a jar with some sweet food and rubbing petroleum jelly over the inner rim of the jar. Cockroaches will climb in to get the food but be unable to escape.
