Ways to Save Money on Malaysian Roads
The recent toll rates increase on all the major highways in the Klang Valley has definitely disappointed many Malaysians. This is because a majority of Klang Valley residents depend on one highway or another to commute to work and save time. This is especially burdensome on those who are fresh graduates, low income earners and middle class salarymen and women.

As with all changes, Malaysians have to struggle to adapt, including finding creative ways to maintain their lifestyle in general. Here are some tips you may find useful in these times of travel cost spikes:

Live nearer your work

In some cases, it is possible for you to consider a move to somewhere nearer work, especially if you plan to commit to this job in the long term. For example, if your workplace is in Klang and you live in Petaling Jaya, the move will save you both petrol and toll costs, not to mention the time you save. So maybe now is a good time to start house hunting.

However, if you work in the vicinity of KLCC, finding accommodations nearby is challenging, so you may consider some of the other suggestions listed here.

Use the trains

This is a useful tip if your office is located near a train station. Simply drive and park your car at the station nearest your house and hop on a train to get to your workplace. You’ll be happy to know that more stations are opening up in the coming months thanks to the LRT line expanding to Subang and Puchong, and the new MRT line from Kajang to Sungai Buloh beginning in 2017.

In any case, a daily commute on the train will be much cheaper than the petrol, toll and parking costs you have to spend monthly.

Car Pool

In some cases, it’s impossible to rely on public transport as they don’t reach your home or workplace. In cases like these where tolls are unavoidable, consider car-pooling with colleagues living nearby. This way, you can share out petrol and toll charges between a few people.

Car-pooling doesn’t necessary have to be with colleagues, but can include your neighbours who work in the vicinity of your office too.

Take turns driving the kids

This tip is specifically for parents who have to send their children to school, tuition, kindergarten or even to the babysitters. Why not take turns with your neighbours and have a rotation system for ferrying the kids so that you don’t have to make the trip daily, and cut it down to maybe 2 or 3 times a week only.

Work from home

If your job is not in the service industry, front desk or customer relations field, you could maybe work out a system with your boss or HR department to work from home half of the week and only come in a couple of times a week. Working from home removes the need to be stuck in jams all the time and consume precious time and money that can be used productively for other things.
