Water services commission raids MRT site for illegal connection

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) raided a Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) construction site today in Kampung Selamat, Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
According to SPAN, it received a report from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) regarding a possible “short piece” illegal water pipe connection at the site about two months ago.
“We found that the site contractor had made what we suspect to be an illegal connection from the 150mm main pipe using a 20mm poly pipe (short piece) to supply water to the workers’ homes and toilets,” said SPAN corporate communications senior executive Loh Pit Mui.
She said that, based on the Syabas report, construction began on May 18, 2012, meaning that the site had been consuming 64.46 cubic metres of water a day for 1,336 days, costing RM200,000.
An MRT Corp representative was at the site to witness the raid but was not in a position to comment at the time. However, he did say that a statement would be made in due course.
According to Loh, six warrants have been issued by SPAN in 2016, based on the 124 reports it has received from the public regarding illegal water connections. In 2015, 8,302 reports were received and 997 warrants were issued.
